When Can I Start Exercising After Having a Baby? | Postnatal Pilates in Epping & Essex
Wondering when you can start exercising after having a baby? Postnatal Pilates in Epping, Essex offers safe, supportive classes for new mums to rebuild strength, recover their core, and feel confident again.
So you’ve just had a baby and you’re wondering: When can I start exercising again?
It’s one of the most common questions I hear from new mums in Epping and across Essex. The good news is: you don’t have to figure it out alone. With gentle, structured postnatal Pilates classes, you can return to exercise safely, rebuild your strength, and feel more like yourself again.
When to Start Exercising After Baby
In the UK, most women are offered a GP check around six weeks postpartum. For many, this is the right time to begin gentle movement.
Why wait six weeks?
-
Your GP can confirm you’re safe to exercise.
-
Your body has started to heal from pregnancy and birth.
-
You’ll be better prepared for group classes.
That said, every mum’s journey is different. If you’ve had a C-section or pelvic floor trauma, you may need longer - and sometimes I recommend seeing a pelvic health physio before starting group Pilates.
Why Postnatal Pilates is the Best First Step
Jumping straight into running, HIIT, or CrossFit isn’t always safe after birth. Postnatal Pilates is different. In my classes here in Epping, we focus on:
-
Core strength recovery (your deep abdominals).
-
Pelvic floor support to prevent leaks and long-term issues.
-
Gentle mobility to release stiff backs and shoulders.
-
Confidence - knowing what movements are safe and what to avoid.
-
Community - connecting with other new mums in Essex who are going through the same stage of life.
Pilates gives you the foundation you need before returning to running, gym training, or other higher-impact workouts.
Common Mistakes New Mums Make
-
Running too soon. Even fit mums need to rebuild core and leg strength first.
-
Ignoring pelvic floor red flags. Leaks or discomfort are signs to slow down, not push through.
-
Comparing to others. Every postnatal journey is unique - your recovery is not someone else’s timeline.
